Frequently Asked Questions

• How much is it?  Do I have to pay for a whole year in advance?

No, you don't!  Fees are payable in advance every four weeks, by cash or by cheque.  Cheques must be made payable to The Academy.  Money is non-refundable.

If you've never been to a class before and aren't sure about the long-term commitment, you can speak to the Principal about paying on a week-by-week basis.

Click here for a full list of payment options.  You can also choose among the classes - whether you want to study acting, singing, dance, or a combination of the three.  (You get a discount if you opt for all three!)

• Who can apply for a place in The Academy?

The Academy is aimed at children from 5 to 16 years of age.  If you are interested in joining then please make sure you apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment - class sizes are limited to enable us to devote the maximum time to each pupil.  Click here for details on how to contact The Academy.

• Can my mum and dad sit in my classes and watch?

Short answer: no, they can't.  While we value feedback and ideas from parents and guardians, it is generally not a good idea to have them hanging around while a class is going on.  It can be inhibiting and distracting to have your own parents watching you in class, let alone somebody else's!

• I just got these fantastic trainers for my birthday.  Can I wear them to class?

Only if you really want to ruin them!  No, The Academy sticks to the following dress code:

•  plain black leggings or jogging pants with a plain black short sleeved t-shirt,
•  black Jazz shoes or boots; black pumps are also acceptable.

It's essential to dress appropriately when coming to class.  (You can't really throw yourself into your part if you're worrying all the time about getting your good trousers dirty.  Costumes are for showtime!)  Also, for safety reasons, jewellery must not be worn to class.  We also ask that you leave jewellery, personal possessions and large amounts of money at home as The Academy cannot be held responsible for personal belongings brought to class.

• Where are The Academy's classes held?  Do we get to put on actual performances?

Lessons are held at Foxdenton Hall, Chadderton, from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays. The Hall is a listed building of great historical interest on Foxdenton Lane.  Click here to learn more about this beautiful building. (Please note: this link is to an external website and The Academy does not own the contents!)

The school year will be divided into three terms, running simultaneously with the academic year.  Each student will receive progress reports twice yearly, following a school showcase to which parents and guardians will be formally invited.  The Academy also proposes to hold a number of workshops during the school holidays, many of which will be completed by a public performance by the students involved.

I want to go on holiday but it clashes with my Academy lessons. Will you give my place away to someone else while I'm gone?

We strongly encourage our students to go on holiday in line with the academic calendar, although we recognise this is not always possible!  Therefore we allow each student two days non-payment of fees within each Academy year, and no, we won't give your place away while you're gone!

• What is the Academy's attitude to bullies?

The Academy has a zero tolerance policy toward bullying.  Any child proven to be verbally or physically abusive to another child, or a member of staff, will be instantly and permanently dismissed from the school.
